BERMAGUI BEACH COTTAGE

The house at Bermagui on the far south coast of New South Wales draws on the spirit of classic weatherboard timber beach cottages. The clients wanted to create a seaside home and getaway that responded to the relaxed coastal lifestyle that the area offered. The home sits within the gentle slope of the site, with a garage level buried underneath. The strong timber framed pavilion structure envelops the space under creating a modern open plan living zone to the house at ground level, and an open loft style master suite at the first floor. The master bedroom suite inhabits the rafters and roof space of the cottage, creating a homely domestic feel. At the ground level, large timber deck terraces open to the north and to the vast views of Bermagui harbour, the mountains and ocean beyond. The timber weatherboards combined with detailed timber work and strong stone base illicit the Australian beach cottage character the clients were seeking.
